Description

Bixby Bridge is an iconic concrete open spandrel arch bridge on the Big Sur rocky coast. About 20 miles south of the City of Monterey, it is a dark sky area (Bortle 1) where the Milky Way blazes from horizon to horizon on summer nights.

This image is composed of four panels; two land/sea and two sky. I shot the land/sea images about 20 minutes after sundown to take advantage of the dim ambient light. I also used a large LED panel with a diffuser to light paint the vegetation in the foreground. I shot the sky after astronomical twilight, taking both 4-minute exposures and 20-second exposures. Weather is mercurial along this stretch of the California coast so six trips over a six-week period were required to gather the exposures needed for the final image.
